Sommaire: 16 July 2007, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments after the second international meeting on the situation in Darfur in Tripoli on 15 and 16 July 2007:
"I warmly welcome the outcome of the Tripoli meeting. It demonstrates at a crucial moment the international community's unity of approach in support for the African Union/United Nations-led process and a clear focus on bringing peace to Darfur.
The meeting announced for 3 to 5 August 2007 in Arusha with the leading personalities of the non-signatory movements is a concrete and encouraging development. It should prepare the ground for early negotiations. The emphasis on an inclusive process - to ensure that the voices of the people in Darfur are heard - is equally important.
I call on all responsible interested parties to facilitate the task of the AU/UN and to refrain from parallel initiatives.
Finally, I would like to pay tribute to the important role played by the regional partners without whom the Tripoli meeting would not have seen such a promising outcome."
