Organisation of the Islamic Conference and the European Union Troikas - Joint Statement

Summary: 29 October 2008, New York - JOINT STATEMENT: Meeting of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and the European Union Troikas

The Troika of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and the Troika of the European Union in New York met on 15 October to discuss issues of common interest particularly within the UN.

The Troika of the OIC was chaired by the Permanent Representative of Uganda, H.E. Mr Francis K.Butagira, the Permanent Representative of Syria, H.E. Mr Bashar Ja'Afari, the Chargé d'affaires a.i. of Pakistan, H.E. Mr Farukh Amil, and the Permanent Observer of the OIC, H.E. Mr Abdul Wahab.

The Troika of the EU was chaired by the Permanent Representative of France, H.E. Mr Jean-Maurice Ripert, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic, Mr Petr Kaiser, the Head of the Liaison Office of the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, H.E. Mr Pedro Serrano and the Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Commission, Mr Peter Schwaiger.

The following topics were considered during the meeting:

1. Cooperation within the UN on the Alliance of Civilizations

2. Cooperation on economic matters

3. Middle East Peace Process.
The meeting provided an opportunity to identify points of convergence on the issues discussed and the desire to continue working together towards a better mutual understanding. It was agreed that meetings at this level should be held biannually in New York. The meeting also decided to encourage interactions at expert level in order to make further progress in the promotion of common interests.
