Georgia: Statement by EUHR Solana on the withdrawal of Russian troops

Russian forces today started their final withdrawal from the areas adjacent to South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia. On this occasion, Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following statement:

"I just spoke to the Head of Mission of the EU Monitoring Mission, Hansjörg HABER, who confirmed to me that the withdrawal is taking place and that the co-operation with the Russian commanders continues to be very constructive.

I express my satisfaction with the evolution of the situation and I welcome the words of President Medvedev that the withdrawal will be completed by midnight."
