The European Union has closely followed recent political developments in South Africa, a country with which the EU has established a particularly varied and fruitful strategic partnership, as shown by the results of the first South Africa/EU Summit held on 25 July in Bordeaux.
The EU expresses its warmest wishes for the success of the mission of the new President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Kgalema Motlanthe.
The EU pays tribute to the statesmanship of Mr Thabo Mbeki, whose work has enabled the South African economy to develop, guaranteed the country's stability and raised its international profile. In this respect, the EU commends his inspiration and vision for the achievement of the "African renaissance". The EU is grateful to Mr Thabo Mbeki for his unwavering personal commitment to stabilisation and peace in Africa and for the multilateralism.
The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
