Angola: EU Presidency Declaration by the Presidency on general elections

Summary: 24 September 2008, Brussels - The European Union is pleased that the first stage of the Angolan electoral process has been completed with the publication of the definitive results of the general elections held on 5 and 6 September 2008.

The European Union welcomes the involvement of all the parties, so that the electoral process can continue calmly to its conclusion, bearing witness to an exemplary national consensus.

The Angolan general elections are the fruit of a considerable effort to which the European Union must pay tribute, despite the logistical difficulties noted, and have been considered by all observers as being successful overall. They show the distance Angola has travelled to achieve national reconciliation, six years after the end of the civil war, and are a strong symbol for the whole of Africa.

Angola must now look resolutely to the future, pursuing its economic recovery and its democratisation process. The European Union is ready to accompany it on this path.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
