The 27 countries of the European Union and 10 Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey) are partners to create a region of peace, security, prosperity and opportunity, based on democracy and human rights.

Within the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, at the Ministerial Conference on "Strengthening the role of women in society" which took place in Istanbul in November 2006, Ministers agreed upon a Framework of Action to be implemented over the next five years to strengthen women's role in political, civil, social, economic and cultural spheres, as well to fight discrimination.

The side event 'Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and the Istanbul process: financing for gender equality and women's empowerment' is organised by the Slovenian Presidency of the European Union and the European Commission in the context of the 52nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
