Agreement on the release of Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian doctor from Libya

Summary: 24 July 2007, Brussels - The plane of the French Republic has just taken off from Libya to Sofia with Ms Cécilia SARKOZY, Ms Benita FERRERO-WALDNER, Mr Claude GUEANT, the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor.

The President of the French Republic, Mr Nicolas SARKOZY, and the President of the European Commission, Mr José Manuel BARROSO, welcome the agreement which has finally allowed this release and this return to Bulgaria of the nurses detained for more than eight years, as well as of the Palestinian doctor, and the implementation of an improved framework to ensure the care dispensed to the children victim of aids in Libya.

The President of the French Republic and the President of the European Commission salute the humanitarian gesture of Libya and of its highest leader and commit themselves to do everything to help the children attained of aids.

They express their profound gratitude to the Emir and the State of Qatar whose mediation has allowed for this happy solution.

This solution would not have been possible without the efforts and the determination of the European Commission, in particular the member of the Commission in charge of external relations, Ms Benita FERRERO-WALDNER, throughout the whole process, and without the personal commitment of Ms Cécilia SARKOZY.
