EUHR Solana welcomes shutting down of Yongbyon nuclear reactor by DPRK

Summary: 16 July 2007: Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments today on the shutting-down of the Yongbyon reactor:

"I very much welcome the shutting-down by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) of the Yongbyon nuclear reactor. I consider it an important step in the right direction, taking forward implementation of the agreement reached by the Six Parties on 13 February 2007.

This shutdown is only the first step and it will of course have to be followed by verification and monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a process which I hope will be completed as soon as possible.

I look forward to the next steps leading to the early implementation of the Joint Declaration of 19 September 2005 on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula."
