Statement by EUHR Solana on presentation of Human Rights Council report on Darfur

Summary: Statement by EUHR Solana on presentation of Human Rights Council report on Darfur (16 March 2007: Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made today the following statement:

"I welcome the presentation of a report on the situation of human rights in Darfur by the mission established by the Human Rights Council by consensus and accepted by the Government of Sudan, on 13 December 2006.

The report is timely as it reminds us all of the desperate plight of civilians in Darfur and the need for the international community, including the relevant UN organizations, to address this issue. The high level mission, under the leadership of Nobel laureate Jody Williams, has done its work thoroughly, basing its report on information and documentation from a large number of reputable sources, including significantly the African Union.

I urge the Members of the Human Rights Council to act on the relevant recommendations contained in the report with the aim of improving the situation of human rights in Darfur".
