European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas will take part in a major international conference on global ecological governance hosted by French President Jacques Chirac in Paris on 2-3 February.

The "Citoyens de la Terre" ("Citizens of the Earth") conference will underline the urgent need for action on a range of pressing environmental threats to the planet and seek to mobilise international support for strengthening global environmental governance. President Chirac will open and close the conference. President Barroso will give a keynote speech. The conference programme includes six workshops covering various environmental threats. Commissioner Dimas will co-chair and speak at the workshop on climate change.
