EUHR Solana welcomes closer links between Japan, China and Republic of Korea, and expresses support in the wake of DPRK nuclear test

Summary: EUHR Solana welcomes closer links between Japan, China and Republic of Korea, and expresses support in the wake of DPRK nuclear test (10 October 2006: Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today made the following comments on recent events in North-East Asia:

"Although the last two days have been overshadowed by bad news from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), it would be wrong not to welcome warmly the visit by the new Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Beijing and Seoul on Sunday and Monday. All three countries are important partners for the EU, and I am pleased to be able to congratulate all three leaders on delivering this very positive development for the region.

I have spoken to the Foreign Ministers of all three countries in the past 24 hours, discussed the implications of the nuclear test and reaffirmed to them the full cooperation and support of the European Union in preparing the international response to the DPRK nuclear test yesterday."
