Summary: EU Presidency Statement - Explanation of Position: Global Climate Change (15 December 2005: New York)
The European Union, although ready to join consensus on the resolution before this Committee, would like to express its disappointment that the important decisions on climate change agreed at the highest possible level at the start of the sixtieth UN General Assembly, was not reflected in the sixtieth session's resolution on climate change.
Mr President,
The European Union would like to take this opportunity to express its satisfaction at the important outcome of the eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the first session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, held in Montreal from 29 November to 9 December. The EU welcomes the adoption of the Marrakech Accords, including the mechanisms and procedures for
compliance, which will allow effective implementation of the Kyoto Protocol - including its flexible mechanisms. We also welcome the decision to start a process to consider commitments under the Kyoto Protocol for the period after 2012 for Parties included in Annex I of the Convention.
The European Union would like to express its satisfaction at the opening of a dialogue under the UNFCCC on long term co-operative action to address climate change by enhancing implementation of the Convention; and at the adoption of the Five Year Adaptation Work Programme.
Thank you.
