Summary: August 23, 2005: Statement by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the Presidential elections in Burundi (Brussels)
The European Union congratulates Pierre Nkurunziza on his victory in the Burundian presidential elections on 19 August. This election should contribute significantly to securing Burundi's future as a democratic and stable country.
The European Union would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all those who have combined their efforts to make the electoral process a success so far: the National Electoral Commission (CENI), ONUB and the EU Observation Mission, but in particular the Burundian people, who turned out in such large numbers to elect their new leaders.
The European Union welcomes President Nkurunziza's recent statements, in which he undertook to adopt an inclusive approach to governing Burundi. The European Union calls on all parties in Burundi to maintain their commitment to democracy and the Burundian peace process, and to work constructively with the new government.
The European Union reiterates its commitment to supporting the remainder of the electoral process. The European Union will continue its support to Burundi as it builds a peaceful, democratic and prosperous future, and looks forward to working with the new government on the key issues of development, reconstruction, justice and human rights.
The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
