EUHR Solana remarks on meeting with Egyptian President Mubarak

Summary: July 10, 2005: Remarks by Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP meeting with Egyptian President Mubarak (Alexandria)

As part of his trip to the Middle East, Mr. Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), had meetings in Egypt with political leaders on 10 July 2005.

Following a meeting with President Hosni Mubarak, he made the following remarks to the Egyptian media.

"My meeting with President Mubarak was a very good one. My trip to the Middle East starts in Egypt, before proceeding to Israel and the West Bank and Gaza.

The Middle East Peace Process has been very high on our agenda today. The Israeli disengagement from Gaza is by now imminent and, if everything goes well, should start on 17 August. Our hope is that Disengagement will take place on time, in an orderly manner and in coordination with the Palestinians and that it will lead to the emergence of two states - both implementing their respective commitments under the Road Map.

I have also personally offered to the President my condolences for the assassination of Egyptian Ambassador, Ihab Sharif, in Iraq. I would like to publicly condemn this act and show my solidarity towards the people and Government of Egypt and to the family of the Ambassador."
