EUHR Solana met with Prime Minister of Albania

Summary: February 9, 2005: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met with Fatos NANO, Prime Minister of Albania (Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with the Albanian Prime Minister, Mr. Fatos NANO.

Mr. Solana called for full commitment by all political parties to free and fair Parliamentary elections not fully in line with international standards would be a serious set-back in Albania's rapprochement with the EU.

The High Representative welcomed the Albanian Parliament's recent adoption of amendments to the electoral code as a positive step, but underlined that the most important challenge was the full implementation of its provisions. In the immediate, he underlined the importance of swiftly reaching a consensual agreement on new electoral zone boundaries, in full cooperation with the OSCE.

Welcoming the progress already achieved, the High Representative called for increased and sustained efforts on reforms and of the full implementation of adopted legislation. He stressed that the fight against organised crime and corruption remained a key issue that needed to be concretely and assertively addressed.

The High Representative also reiterated his appreciation of Albania's active and moderating role in the Western Balkans.
