"On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to express my most sincere condolences on the demise of President Yasser Arafat. The Palestinians have lost a leader who symbolised their aspirations of a Palestinian state.
I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to the family of President Arafat and to the Palestinian people.
The Commission wishes to express its continued commitment to a resolution of the Middle East conflict. The Commission is working with the Palestinian Authority towards this goal and towards ensuring a peaceful and democratic transition in the days and weeks to come.
