Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), wrote today to President-elect Hamid KARZAI congratulating him on his victory in the first direct Presidential elections recently held in Afghanistan:
"I would like to convey my sincere congratulations on your victory in the recent Presidential elections held in Afghanistan. The people of your country made history by participating in so great a number in these important elections. They have bestowed on you a strong and clear mandate to carry forward the democratic transformation of the country. It sets the pace for the forthcoming parliamentary elections in the spring of 2005.
The European Union remains fully committed to supporting the reform and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. I look forward to continued close co-operation and contact between us."
