
Summary: August 4, 2004: Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on presidential and parliamentary elections in Angola (Brussels)
The EU welcomes the statement by the Council of the Republic of 2 July 2004 on the elections in Angola, and the subsequent letter by the president to ask the parliament to take the necessary steps to implement the legal framework to prepare the next elections. This statement reflects the Angolan commitment to the democratic and electoral process.
Important tasks lie ahead to meet the conditions for organising these elections.
The EU appeals to the Angolan government to set up a timetable for the different stages of the preparations for the elections and to continue its active effort to create the legal, financial and technical conditions in order to call for elections in 2006.
The EU stands ready to contribute to the establishment of a proper and conducive environment for free and fair elections.
The Candidate Countries Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
