Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with Zurab ZHVANIA, Prime Minister of Georgia.
The two leaders welcomed the recent inclusion of the South Caucasus in the European Neighbourhood Policy. This is considered to be an important development in helping Georgia and the rest of the region to move closer to European standards.
The High Representative expressed his satisfaction with the start today in Brussels of the Donors' conference for Georgia, organised by the European Commission and the World Bank.
The discussion also concentrated on the launch of the first ever Rule of Law Mission of the European Union, which is expected to start in Georgia by mid-July. The mission is felt to be an important signal of EU political engagement in the country and in the region.
The meeting was also an opportunity to look at the current situation in Adjara, in light of its recent return to central government control. Future possible developments concerning the situation in South Ossetia and Abkhazia were also addressed by the High Representative and the Prime Minister.
The High Representative Solana and Prime Minister Zhvania also addressed the general situation in the South Caucasus and relations with neighbouring countries.

The Rule of Law Mission will address urgent challenges in the criminal justice system of Georgia and assist in developing a co-ordinated overall Georgian approach to the reform process in full complementarity with current EU assistance in other fields. The mission will consist of ten EU experts co-located in key-positions with the Supreme Court, the General Prosecutor and relevant ministries.
