EUHR Javier SOLANA talks on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel SHARON

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), received a phone call today from the Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel SHARON, to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East region, and in particular his plan to withdraw from the Gaza strip.

The High Representative (HR) reiterated the European Union's position of support to the withdrawal from all Gaza settlements and parts of the West Bank, in accordance with the latest statement of the Quartet for peace in the Middle East (United Nations, European Union, Russia and the United States), which met in New York on 4 May 2004.

HR Solana welcomed Prime Minister Sharon's invitation to visit Israel in the future.
