Summary: March 15, 2004: Statement by Ms. Margaret Stanley, Second Secretary, on behalf of the European Union. Remarks on the Secretary-General's Bulletin SG/SGB/2004/4 (New York)
Mr Chairman,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union. The Acceding Countries Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia, the Stabilization and Association Process Countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro, the Associated Countries Bulgaria and Romania and the EFTA countries, members of the European Economic Area, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, declare that
they align themselves with this statement.
We thank the Secretariat for the bulletin [ST/SGB/2004/4] on the determination of family status for the purposes of entitlements. In our view this is a welcome step, reflecting as it does the Secretary General's determination to modernise the human resources management of the United Nations in line with legislative advances in many member States and the practice of other international organisations.
The principle within the United Nations Secretariat of determining family status according to the law of nationality is long-established and widely recognised. The European Union is satisfied with this practice and we see no reason why the Secretary General's prerogative in this area should now be contested.
Thank you Mr. Chairman.
