Summary: August 20, 2003: Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the suicide attack in Jerusalem (Brussels)
The European Union is horrified by the brutal and evil act of terrorism which was perpetrated against the people of Israel yesterday evening in Jerusalem.
The European Union expresses its deepest condolences and closest solidarity for the innocent victims, to their families and to the government of Israel.
The European Union reaffirms that the fight against all forms of terrorism is paramount in the quest for a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. The EU fiercely condemns this inhuman attack which was intended at undermining the negotiation process, based on the road map principles accepted by all parties involved. This brutal act of violence was claimed by groups which totally oppose any kind of peaceful solution, thus choosing, by virtue of their own actions, to set themselves
outside the rule of law. In this context, the European Union fully understands and supports Prime Minister Abbas' decision to freeze all contacts with those radical groups.
The European Union expects the parties, as a most effective response to this last outbreak of violence, to strengthen their determination to proceed, without any hesitations, on the path towards peace along the principles set by the road map.
