Summary: May 5, 2003: EU Statement on Candidatures for the Appointment of the External Auditor for the Agency (Vienna)
Madam Chairperson,
1. I am speaking on behalf of the European Union. The Acceding Countries Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia and the Associated Countries Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey declare that they associate themselves with this statement.
2. Madam Chairperson, on the item of candidatures for the external auditor of the Agency for the financial period 2004-2005, the EU fully align itself with the candidature presented by the German Supreme Audit Institution. We are convinced that the broad experience of the German Auditor in auditing the financial and programme performance of international organisations both outside and within the UN System, including some of its specialized agencies, will be to the advantage of both the Agency
and its Member countries.
3. In addition, the experience that the German Auditor has gained in the years 1994-2002 in auditing the accounts of UNIDO - responsible for the management of the VIC - and in assisting UNIDO to manage the transition to a Euro based budget can only be to the benefit of the IAEA, which after all, operates in the same local environment and premises.
Thank you, Madam Chairperson.
