Summary: March 18, 2003: EU Statement on the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) (Vienna)
Madam Chairperson,
I am speaking on behalf of the European Union. The Acceding Countries Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia, the Associated Countries Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey as well as Norway declare that they associate themselves with this statement.
The EU notes the end of the long negotiation on the possible amending of the CPPNM even if its outcome has not resulted in consensus. Nevertheless, in this context, the EU would like to commend the large efforts of Mr. Miroslav Gregoric of Slovenia, Mr.Denis Flory of France, as well as of the Director General and his staff, who so professionally assisted them.
The EU suggests that parties to the Convention consider how the work can be taken forward with a view to convening a diplomatic conference under Article 20 of the CPPNM. In the meantime, the EU calls all concerned States to informally consult each other with a view to solve the outstanding issues.
Thank you Madam Chairperson.
