Summary: July 3, 2003: Remarks by His Excellency Ambassador Pier Benedetto Francese, Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy, on behalf of the European Union, on the adoption by the General Assembly of the resolution on Prevention of Armed Conflicts (New York)

Mr. President,

On behalf of the European Union and the Acceding Countries I would like to express the most sincere gratitude for the excellent way you conducted these negotiations, as a result of which we were able to adopt today, on the basis of consensus, this important resolution. Its relevance is further witnessed by the presence of Deputy-Secretary-General, Louise Fréchette.

The EU believes that this resolution constitutes a meaningful first step in the direction of enhancing the conflict prevention capacities of the United Nations and of the Member States and it might hence contribute to the prevention of armed conflicts and to the promotion of peace and security.

Mr. President,

We also would like to congratulate all the Member States who participated in the consultations during these months and whose will and dedication made it possible to adopt successfully the present resolution today.

Finally, Mr. President, we would like to thank the facilitators for their continuous efforts and the Secretariat Staff for their hard work.
