Parliament adopted a joint resolution on the situation in Indonesia. MEPs are deeply concerned about the appalling violence and the persistent conflict in Aceh. The House urges the Indonesian Government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) to return to the negotiating table. MEPs stress that the rebels should decommission their weapons and the House also calls on the Indonesian Army to withdraw from the region. MEPs, in particular, deplore restrictions on freedom of the press provided for under martial law. The House also calls on the Malaysian Government to take all requisite measures to ensure that its territory is not used as a base for guerrilla operations.

With regard to the Province of Papua, MEPs are concerned about the possible division of the province into three new provinces.
