EUHR Solana meets with Serbian PM

Summary: May 20, 2003: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, meets Mr. Zoran Zivkovic, Prime Minister of Serbia (Brussels)

Javier Solana, High Representative for the EU's Foreign and Security Policy, today met with Mr. Zoran Zivkovic, Prime Minister of Serbia. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in Serbia and Montenegro.

The High Representative praised Prime Minister Zivkovic's positive contribution in ensuring necessary reforms in Serbia. "We are very pleased to see how things are evolving since Zoran Zivkovic took responsibility in Belgrade, in extremely difficult and tragic circumstances. Prime Minister Zivkovic is making very solid progress in all the dossiers that are on the table in Serbia", Javier Solana told the press after the meeting.

The High Representative praised PM Zivkovic for the extraordinary efforts deployed by his government, at a difficult time for the republic. "Whether in the fight against organised crime, or in co-operating with the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, or in dealing with reform of the Armed Forces, as well as with constitutional and electoral reforms, it would have been very difficult to achieve more in such a short period of time. I wish to congratulate him publicly for his leadership."

On Serbia and Montenegro, the High Representative underlined the constructive relationship that exists between the two Governments and Prime Ministers alike, within the new State framework. Commenting on the regional situation, Dr. Solana said the European Union is determined to support the process of reforms and would like to see most of them adopted soon, in order to pave the way for a successful Summit in Thessaloniki next June.
