Summary: April 16, 2003: International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia Council approves travel ban on persons involved in the evasion of justice (Brussels)
The Council adopted today by written procedure a common position aimed at supporting the effective implementation of the mandate of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia by placing a travel ban on persons involved in the evasion of justice (doc. 8157/03).
The common position requires Member States to take the necessary measures to prevent the entry or transit of specific persons (listed in annex to the common position), who are engaged in activities helping persons at large to evade justice for crimes for which the ICTY has indicted them, or who are otherwise acting in a manner which could obstruct effective implementation of the ICTY's mandate.
The list of persons subject to the travel ban will be updated by the Council upon request of a Member State or the Commission. The European Union shall furthermore encourage third countries to adopt similar measures in order to maximize their impact.
The common position shall apply initially for 12 months; it shall be kept under constant review and renewable after that period.
