Summary: March 14, 2003: Statement by Mr. Theodore Economou - Kamarinos, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Greece to the UN, on behalf of the European Union, at the closing of the 1st Substantive Session of the SSOD IV Working Group (New York)
Mr. Chairman,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union. The acceding countries, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the countries associated with the EU - Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey - align themselves with this statement.
It is with great pleasure that we have seen in the last few days a new spirit prevailing in the works of the SSOD VI Working Group (WG). New ideas in a new atmosphere are inspiring the delegations towards a much more satisfactory and fruitful process that could eventually lead to the successful completion of the tasks set to the Working Group.
The EU believes that this process will avoid a sterile and unimaginative approach of SSOD IV and should not consume itself on a drafting and wording exercise. What we do need for the next WG meeting are a new approach and new ideas concerning the essence of SSOD IV.
In this context, the EU would like to congratulate you, Mr. Chairman, upon your initiative to present the WG with a new paper, which, we are convinced, will reflect this new atmosphere and will prove to be productive during its next meeting.
Thank you Mr. Chairman.
