EU Presidency Statement - Conflict prevention

Summary: February 7, 2003: Statement by H.E. Ambassador Adamantios Th. Vassilakis, Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN, on behalf of the European Union. General Statement on Prevention of Armed Conflicts. FIFTY-SEVENTH SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY - FIRST COMMITTEE (New York)

EU General Statement on Conflict Prevention

1. I have the honor to speak on behalf of the European Union. The acceding countries Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the associated countries Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey, as well as the EFTA Country, member of the EEA, Iceland declare that they align themselves with this statement.

2. The EU appreciates your continuing efforts to come up with a draft resolution on conflict prevention that meets the agreement of everyone.

3. The issue of conflict prevention is of particular significance to the EU and to its Member States and we endorse the ideas and recommendations which are contained in the Report of Secretary General on conflict prevention of armed conflict in 2001. For this reason we are pleased to see that the draft resolution that you have elaborated is mainly focused on that Report and contains action-oriented recommendations for its implementation.

4. The EU notes with satisfaction that the text of the draft resolution is short and concise and structured along the lines of the Secretary General's Report, encapsulating the basic ideas and recommendations of the latter.

5. The EU has some ideas as regards conflict prevention and the improvement of the present text. However, in the interest of achieving a compromised solution the EU can go along with the present text as it has been proposed by you, Mr. Chairman.
