Summary: November 30, 2000: Statement made by Mr Christophe Bigot. The situation in the Middle East. Explanation of vote by the European Union (New York)
Mr. President,
I have the honor to explain the vote of the European Union on the draft resolution contained in document A/55/L.50.
The European Union reiterates here its firm commitment to a just, lasting and comprehensive settlement in the Middle East based on Security Council resolutions 242 and 338, on the principle "land for peace" as well as on the Madrid and Oslo Accords. The European Union wishes to express once again its extreme concern in the face of the current crisis in the Occupied Territories and in Israel. The European Union reiterates here its wish of an early resumption of the peace talks, interrupted
despite the hopes created by the meeting at Camp David. We also fully support early resumption of negotiations on the Lebanese and Syrian tracks.
As in previous years the draft resolution regarding the Syrian Golan contains geographical references, which prejudge the outcome of bilateral negotiations. That is why the European Union has again abstained in the vote.
The European Union reiterates here solemnly its support to all those, in the region and in the international community, who work towards peace.
Thank you, Mr. President.
