Summary: July 25, 2001: Statement by Mr. Bruno van der Pluijm the Representative of Belgium on behalf of the European Union. Committee on Development Policy
Mr. Chairman,
1. Allow me to address you on behalf of the European Union. The Central and Eastern European Countries associated with the European Union - Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia -, and the other associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, endorse this statement.
Mr. Chairman,
2. Let me first pass on my thanks to the Committee for Development Policy (CDP) for the report on its third session.
In its statement to the high level segment, the European Union has already referred to the Committee's contribution to this year's theme. Its thoughts on the theme of "governance responsibilities in a globalising world" and its proposal for the fourth session were received with equal interest.
3. With regard to the LDCs, and in particular the case of the Maldives, the European Union regrets the great delay in which the information requested by the Council in its Resolution 2000/34 was forwarded to it: as to the UNCTAD report, it was only circulated last Thursday, that is on the very day that item 13a was inscribed on the agenda. A definitive decision on removing the Maldives from the list at this July session is bound to be difficult. In such regrettable circumstances, the EU joins
the consensus to postpone the examination of this question until the next resumed session of ECOSOC.
4. Finally, the European Union welcomes the Committee's proposal to submit to the Council in 2002 the criteria for its next triennial review of the list of LDCs.
Thank you for your attention, Mr. Chairman
