Summary: August 1, 2002: Statement of Commissioner Barnier on behalf of the European Commission on the terror attack at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Brussels)
On behalf of the European Commission, I wish to condemn in the strongest terms the latest twist in the spiral of terror in the form of the cruel attack at the Mount Scopus Campus of Jerusalem's Hebrew University. Our thoughts go first and foremost to the families and friends of the victims of this tragic event including those who have been injured by the blast.
Terror has brought death and suffering in a place which for Europeans has a particular symbolic importance. The Hebrew University is a lively centre of culture, of communication and of learning where students of different nationalities and ethnic origin work closely and harmoniously together, including, of course, Israelis and Palestinians.
The Hebrew University is particularly close to the European Union and to the Commission. The first Israeli Monnet Chair on EU integration studies was established there last year. Its centre on European studies is in regular contact with the EU institutions to organised exchanges and cultural events. Its scientific labs are part of many joint projects with EU partners, funded by the EC research framework programme. Its political science institutes help to promote, with the Commissions' support,
a number of "people to people" and human rights projects for peace.
Our condolences have been extended to the relatives of the victims, to all the students and the staff of the Hebrew University, and to the people and the government of Israel by our Head of Delegation in Tel Aviv.
