Summary: April 12, 2002: Declaration by the Presidency of the European Union on the situation in the Middle East (Madrid)
The Presidency of the European Union expresses its utmost concern at the rising tension in the area despite the efforts deployed by the US Secretary of State, Mr. Powell, to implement the statement adopted by the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia in Madrid, with the widest support of the International Community.
The Presidency of the European Union expresses its most firm condemnation of the terrorist attack perpetrated today in Jerusalem, which has only come to increase suffering and grief and resulted in the loss of innocent lives.
Furthermore, the Presidency of the European Union considers very alarming the news on the events taking place in the refugee camp of Jenin, which, if confirmed, would have grave consequences, in a moment in which the International Community has appealed for restraint and stated its concern about the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.
