Transfer to UNMIK of Kosovo Albanian detainees

Summary: March 27, 2002: Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the transfer to UNMIK of Kosovo Albanian detainees by the authorities in Belgrade (Brussels)

The European Union welcomes the transfer to UNMIK custody of 146 Kosovo Albanian prisoners. The authorities thus fulfill their undertaking in that regard as contained in the UNMIK/FRY Common Document of 5 November 2001. More importantly, they provide appropriate remedy to the prolonged detention of the Kosovo Albanians, while building confidence among communities in Kosovo itself.

The European Union encourages all concerned parties to continue to cooperate constructively in the other areas of common interest provided for in the UNMIK/FRY Common Document.

The European Union urges the authorities in Belgrade to fulfill other important international obligations, including cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal on the former Yugoslavia. In doing so, they will move Serbia and Montenegro one step closer to European integration.
