Summary: February 12, 2002: Commission approves substantial programme to strengthen health care and fight HIV/ AIDS in South Africa (Brussels)
The European Commission has approved a €50 million programme over 6 years to assist the South African Government in strengthening primary health care in the country and in fighting HIV/AIDS. The programme called "Partnerships for the Delivery of Primary Health Care including HIV/AIDS", targets the poorest of the poor through community and home based care initiatives. Welcoming this decision, Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Poul Nielson said: "AIDS is impacting upon all
aspects of the healthcare system in developing countries, most notably at the primary healthcare level. This programme compliments our existing support to the health sector in South Africa. It is critical that whilst the Commission is at the forefront of policy development in the global response to HIV/AIDS in developing countries, we can at the same time demonstrate our commitment to making a difference on the ground."
