About the EU at the UN - Council Secretariat
New York

Established in 1994, after the entry into force of the Treaty on the European Union (the Maastricht Treaty), the Council of the European Union's Liaison Office in New York (NYLO) mainly serves as a support structure to the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).

The Council Secretariat, in its function of assisting the Presidency of the Council, also takes part in the political dialogue meetings carried out in the so-called Troika format, normally consisting of the Presidency, the Commission, and the future Presidency.

The Maastricht Treaty rendered mandatory systematic cooperation between the Member States and the coordination of their action in International Organisations in order to ensure that EU policies defined in the framework of the CFSP were complied with and implemented.
