The Geneva Liaison Office was opened in the late 1960s. Negotiations concerning the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) originally provided its main work. Its role has subsequently expended considerably, in particular since the introduction of the EU's common foreign and security policy (CFSP). The Office is responsible for keeping track of international organisations whose work in Geneva is of relevance to the European Union. It forms part of the Directorate General for External and Politico Military Affairs (DG E).
The Office's task is to let the European Union speak with one voice, to assist the Presidency and Member States in putting forward the EU's views at the United Nations and other international organisations or intergovernmental bodies in Geneva and to brief the General Secretariat of the Council in Brussels on events in all those forums as they take place.
